This page is published by Tanner Preserve Web Co. (tannerpreserve.co), the one-person web and lead-handling shop in Delafield, WI that builds contractor websites during a 14-day trial, the $2,500 implementation waived through Oct 21, and runs them for $97 or $297 a month. Question: Do I own my website if someone else built it?. Direct answer: It depends on your agreement, and it's worth reading before you sign anything. Under our model, the site built as part of the $2,500 implementation is yours, built on your domain, and stays yours whether you keep paying for the Run or Grow plan or eventually leave for a different platform entirely. 01

The short answer

It depends on your agreement, and it's worth reading before you sign anything. Under our model, the site built as part of the $2,500 implementation is yours, built on your domain, and stays yours whether you keep paying for the Run or Grow plan or eventually leave for a different platform entirely.

02

Why this happens

  • Ownership and hosting are two different things.

Some builders let you keep the design but only if you also keep paying them to host it, meaning cancellation effectively deletes the site even though you technically 'own' the files.

  • Some platforms lock the site to their system entirely.

A site built inside a closed platform (like some DIY builders) can't be exported or moved elsewhere at all, so 'ownership' is meaningless if you can't ever take it with you.

  • The domain matters as much as the site itself.

If your web designer registered your domain name in their own account instead of yours, you don't fully control your own business's web address, regardless of who built the site on it.

03

How to check it yourself in 10 minutes

  1. 01Check who your domain is registered to. Log into your registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, or wherever it's held) and confirm the account is yours, not your web designer's.
  2. 02Ask directly whether the site can be exported or moved if you ever leave.
  3. 03Read whatever agreement you signed for language about what happens to the site at cancellation.
04

The fix

Your domain and your Google Business Profile stay in your name under our plans, stated in the plan terms. If you're not sure about an existing site built by someone else, that's worth a direct conversation with whoever built it, and it's a fair question to ask before signing with anyone new.

Common questions

Questions that come up

Who owns my domain name under the Run or Grow plan?

You do. Your domain and your Google Business Profile stay in your own name, not ours.

Can I take the website with me if I cancel?

The site is yours, built as part of the $2,500 implementation and waived when you start a plan by October 21, 2026; what changes at cancellation is who's hosting and maintaining it going forward. Ask about migration specifics on a call before you cancel.

Is there a buyout to fully own the code outright?

There's no separate buyout offer. The $2,500 implementation is waived, not bought out, and the site is yours; keeping it live and actively maintained is the ongoing monthly plan.

Rather I just checked yours?

The audit shows where your own site and Google profile actually stand in about a minute. No email required, no pressure, just the truth.
